Why ASO
- Stroke incidence is rising rapidly in Africa, making it one of the leading causes of death and disability .
- Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and limited access to prevention and care drive high mortality rates — up to 80% in some regions .
- Only a small fraction of African hospitals currently offer high‑quality stroke care — ASO is working to close this critical gap across both urban and rural areas.
Our Mission
To significantly reduce Africa’s stroke burden by:
- Promoting evidence-based care, education, and research across all regions
- Strengthening stroke systems of care, including emergency response, tele‑stroke, acute units, and rehabilitative services — with pilot programs in Nigeria & Tanzania
- Raising continent-wide awareness of stroke risk factors and FAST warning signs (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) through public campaigns
