Why ASO

  • Stroke incidence is rising rapidly in Africa, making it one of the leading causes of death and disability .
  • Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and limited access to prevention and care drive high mortality rates — up to 80% in some regions .
  • Only a small fraction of African hospitals currently offer high‑quality stroke care — ASO is working to close this critical gap across both urban and rural areas.

Our Mission

To significantly reduce Africa’s stroke burden by:

  • Promoting evidence-based care, education, and research across all regions
  • Strengthening stroke systems of care, including emergency response, tele‑stroke, acute units, and rehabilitative services — with pilot programs in Nigeria & Tanzania
  • Raising continent-wide awareness of stroke risk factors and FAST warning signs (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) through public campaigns

ASOC: Our Flagship Event

The ASOC was established by a multidisciplinary team of African and global stroke experts, clinicians, researchers, and public health advocates

These individuals represent a broad geographic and disciplinary spectrum, ensuring that the ASOC reflects the diverse needs and realities of stroke care across Africa

African Stroke Organization Conference (ASOC) — the premier annual forum for Africa-focused cerebrovascular health:

  • ASOC 2024 (4–5 Nov, hybrid): Emphasising “Controlling the Burden of Stroke: Gateway to Reducing Non‑Communicable Disease”

  • Past editions, including ASOC 2023 in Ibadan, Nigeria, successfully convened leading experts to accelerate Africa‑centric stroke strategies

  • Features keynote lectures, policy dialogues, clinical breakout sessions, robust research, and skill-building workshops.
